Jessica Johnson

Senior Fellow, McGill University’s Centre for Media, Technology, and Democracy

Jessica Johnson is a senior fellow at McGill University’s Centre for Media, Technology, and Democracy, where she is leading the national research project “What Should the CBC Be?” She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, where she teaches literary journalism and media studies. From 2017 to 2023, Jessica was editor-in-chief of The Walrus, one of Canada’s only non-profit general interest publications, which operates under an educational mandate. Her cover story on the state of the media industry, “Journalism’s Wicked Problem: Save What’s Lost or Invest in What’s New?” was the 2021 O’Hagan Essay on Public Affairs. An award-winning writer, Jessica has written for the Globe & Mail, the Toronto Star, the Guardian, the New Republic, Toronto Life, and Elle (U.S.).
