DemocracyXChange and the Toronto Public Library present Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University, Timothy Snyder, author of On Freedom, in conversation with Nahlah Ayed at the Toronto Reference Library's Appel Salon.

One of the most fundamental obligations of democratic societies, freedom, has begun to lose it's meaning. The word that's been chanted in the face of tyrannical oppression for centuries has started to become the default yell of the disenfranchised, the disappointed, the disilusioned and the inconvenienced. But true freedom, as Timothy Snyder argues, isn’t so much freedom from as freedom to — the freedom to thrive, to take risks for futures we choose by working together.

In this special in-conversation event, Snyder and Ayed discuss the political thinkers and dissidents who have helped define freedom - and why a shared understanding of freedom might be our only chance for survival.

Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase.

Admission to this free Snyder talk requires separate registration via Toronto Public Library.
