Shauna Sylvester took a leave from her role as the Executive Director of the SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue to run as an independent candidate for Mayor in the City of Vancouver 2018 civic elections. Gaining over 21% of the popular vote, Ms. Sylvester ran a campaign focused on policy solutions drawing on over 30 years of experience working in government on corporate boards and in community.
Ms. Sylvester is a former board member of Vancity, Mountain Equipment Cooperative, the BC Assessment Authority and she served as the lead facilitator for Moving in a Livable Region (Metro’s transportation consortium) and the 2012 Mayors’ Task Force on Affordable Housing. She took an unconventional approach to developing her campaign platform through convening 28 living room citizen dialogues and four expert advisory committees on housing, small business, innovation and the opioid poisoning crisis.
In December, Ms. Sylvester returned to her role at SFU where among several programs, she co-leads a Pan-Canadian democratic resilience project.
