The DemocracyXChange Team has been monitoring recent conference cancellations, travel restrictions and preparedness messages related to novel coronavirus (COVID-19). To date, Health Canada has not placed any special restrictions on public gatherings. However, this is a rapidly evolving situation and we want to prioritize the health and safety of all DXC20 participants and the communities to which we all belong.
Given these considerations, DemocracyXChange will be postponed until Fall or early Winter.
We all have a role to play in realizing a healthy democracy. At this time we want to ensure that we are doing our part to support public health through social distancing measures. We do not take this decision lightly and in fact view it as an act of responsible citizenship. Our team will be taking the following steps:
- Monitoring ongoing information from the World Health Organization, Health Canada, and Ontario Public Health related to risk of public gathering and travel advisements.
- Communicating with our venue and hotel partners to coordinate an alternative date in Fall or early Winter to host DemocracyXChange.
- Collaborating with our event production team, sponsors, partners and participants on a proactive risk assessment plan to ensure that our Summit continues to prioritize the safety of all DXC participants.
Our team, presenting partners, sponsors, programme advisory members and volunteers have been planning and designing an incredible programme for DXC20. We want to put on a conference worthy of what we have built, together, for the emerging, expanding and diverse community of people thinking about and working on democracy in Canada and beyond. The current circumstances and levels of concern do not allow for that but, we know we can realize this vision at a later date.
Thus, the planning for DXC20 will continue in the coming weeks and months. It is also clear to us that in addition to conversations around values, money and power, we will need to hold space at DXC20 to talk about how to practice democracy in the aftermath of COVID-19. The need to gather in-person, to connect across cultures and ideology, and continue building community, will be even greater. We are currently in discussions with our partners about alternative dates, and will provide updated information as it becomes available.
Tickets that have already been purchased to DemocracyXChange will automatically transfer to our new Summit dates. If you are unable to attend or require a refund, it can be requested by emailing our Program Advisor, Sabreena Delhon at email@example.com.
